The Versa Hatchback is powered by a 1.8L four-cylinder, rated at 122 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. That power is sent to the front wheels through either a four-speed automatic, six-speed manual or a CVT. No matter the transmission configuration, the Versa Hatchback achieves an EPA highway fuel economy rating of more than 30 mpg. The base model Versa Hatchback comes rather well equipped -- with such features as air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, six standard airbags and a tire pressure monitoring system -- with the up-level SL Versa adding a six-way driver's seat and cruise control.

The S can be optioned with a Power package that includes remote keyless entry, powered locks and windows, a glove compartment lamp and rear door pockets. An ABS system that also incorporates Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist requires the Power package and cruise control boxes to be ticked first. Options on the SL include a Convenience package comprised of a keyless entry system, Bluetooth phone connectivity, leather wrapped steering when redundant audio controls on the wheel's spokes. The Audio Package includes a premium speaker system along with a Rockford Fosgate powered subwoofer for the audio system's MP3-capable head unit. A moonroof is coupled with dual illuminated vanity mirrors in the sunshades. The Sport pack is made up of fog lights, unique front and rear bumper covers and side skirts as well as a rear spoiler, the latter of which can be had as a stand-alone option on either trim.

The Versa is Nissan's global small car, with styling that is very European, which is not surprising considering it was designed in France. The Versa is built on Nissan's B-segment platform, and is assembled alongside the Sentra at Nissan's Aguascalientes, Mexico factory. In Mexico, Japan and China, the Versa is called Tiida. The Versa hatch platform will also likely underpin a small global car from Dodge, likely to be named after the Hornet concept car.
