"The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet U.S. Marketing. "The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about."

Aveo, of course, did not carry the same gravitas. As GM President of North America, Mark Reuss, put it, Aveo is "difficult to pronounce and confuses customers." It's also attached to a car that's been a perpetual disappointment and is likely damaged beyond repair from a marketing standpoint. At least in the U.S., anyway, as the Aveo name will stay for all markets outside of North America. Canada, Mexico and the U.S. will get Sonic.

The new Sonic will go into production at GM's Orion Assembly Center in Michigan sometime in 2011. A production model is expected at an upcoming U.S. auto show and will likely go on-sale by the end of the year as a 2012 model.
